Retired horticulture graduate turns her hobby into a career

Oklahoma City Public Schools (OKCPS) Star Spencer High School graduate Treva McNeill turned a hobby into her own business through the Horticulture Program at Metro Tech.

"I've always been an artsy crafty type of person. I made floral arrangements and decorations for family events and weddings, but I disliked buying supplies and not knowing the proper lingo for different types of arrangements," Treva said.

A retired Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agent, Treva enrolled in the Horticulture Program at Metro Tech to put book knowledge and professional techniques behind her passion for floral design. While in the program, she won first place in floral arranging at the SkillsUSA state competition.

After graduating from the program, she opened The Floral Chateau, a small flower shop that offers custom and traditional arrangements for all occasions. When a customer requests a certain type of arrangement, Treva knows what she's doing AND what she's talking about.

"I display my state champion banner to remind myself that with a little bit of passion and love, a person can accomplish anything. Metro Tech gave me the knowledge and skill set to back up my passion and talent."

Treva plans to continue improving her skills and eventually expand her business to add more employees.

The Floral Chateau is located at 1829 NE 23rd Street in Oklahoma City. The phone number is (405) 314-3883.
