Metro Tech South Bryant Campus forms multifaceted partnership with OKCPS Bodine Elementary

Oklahoma City Public Schools (OKCPS) Bodine Elementary School sits within walking distance of Metro Tech's South Bryant Campus (SBC). As SBC Site Directors Derek Lollis and David Martin brainstormed on goals for the year, the elementary school came to mind.

In the last few years, Bodine Elementary has been in the news multiple times, but most recently for the hiring of a new principal that sought to turn the school culture around.

When Bodine Principal Nikki Coshow was approached by Metro Tech site directors regarding a possible partnership, she was elated to provide more educational opportunities for students. OKCPS administration, faculty and staff have worked hard to create a positive atmosphere at Bodine, and their efforts are working.

Right now, Bodine students walk to SBC once every week and spend time in the welding program classroom. In a few weeks, a new group of students will rotate into a different career program. Three sixth grade students have also been added to SBC's student leadership academy that launched this year.

Lollis said the partnership is beneficial to both schools in many ways.

"Exposing young students to career exploration early gives them a vision for their future. The students from Bodine seem to enjoy learning new skills, and we certainly like having them," he said.
