GirlTECH is a mentorship program that was held at Northeast Academy and Metro Technology Centers in 2012 & 2013. The GirlTECH mission is to equip students with skills needed to pursue careers in non-traditional areas, commonly held by men, such as science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) and other current, emerging high-skill occupations.
The girls cultivated professional relationships with female mentors through online correspondence at least once a week. The participants took field trips to science museums and visited stem related businesses. Job shadowing and soft skills training were included in the program. Student Solana Ceville said, “It’s fun, but you are also learning something new. It can help improve your life.”
Positive benefits the girls receive is having a career to look forward to that can be inspiring for their future. GirlTECH will continue at Metro Tech in the fall.
